As for the whisky itself, it’s a nice, rich amber in the glass, with thin, slow legs. I particularly like the raised emblem placed on the front center of the bottle (a unique feature implemented in the design of many – though not all – of Jura’s offerings). Jura found a great design balance that to me is both contemporary without falling down the slippery slope into tackiness. Now I’ve no doubt that visiting the island of Jura would be a magical experience in itself (so much so, that George Orwell chose the island as his writing spot for his literary masterpiece 1984… though on second thought, considering the dystopia he created, one wonders at the island’s potential influences…), but just because the island is a magical place doesn’t necessarily mean the land’s sole distillery can lay ownership of that same wizardry. Finished in, “a mix of American white oak and sherry casks,” they advertise the flavor on the bottle as “fruity and spicy.” Released at the end of 2011, the Jura Elixir has been aged for 12 years before bottling – a bit longer then Jura’s 10 year aged line, but quite a bit less than their 21 year or 30 year offerings. After falling into disrepair and being dismantled in 1901, the distillery was rebuilt and reopened in 1963 and has been brewing ever since. The Jura distillery was first founded in 1810, but like so many Scotch distilleries, saw its own share of bad luck. Opens with some sweeter PX and lots of delicious raw ginger before becoming creamier with hazelnuts. Nose: Rich cereals, struck match, raisin, cinnamon, caramelised sugar. For those of you with Jim Murray’s ‘Whisky Bible 2018’ his review of the Glendronach 12yo ‘Original’ was added in 2011 and refers to a bottle distilled before Glendronach closed in 1995. The ‘LK’ part suggests it was bottled in 2016, which means it was distilled after Glendronach reopened in 2001.

Scoring 4/5 on Master of Malt is very good and comments from 2017 include, “one of the best non cask-strength sherry casks I’ve ever had”, “smoother than Macallan 12 but with similar notes” and “good dram for the uninitiated to try”.
It may only be 12 years old and 43% but the maturation in both Pedro Ximénez & Oloroso casks bestows ‘sherry bomb’ qualities, all for a very reasonable price. Comments include “definitely worth recommending for those looking for a good introduction into the intense flavors of red fruits” and “this malt is a keeper of consistently high quality”. The fact that the Glendronach 12yo has over 900 votes on Whiskybase is testament to how loved this dram is by whisky enthusiasts.
